The funnest school day ever.....

Yesterday morning started out like any other Monday morning....me grouchy from no sleep the night before, getting babies off to visit and daycare, breakfast, a visit from a caseworker...instructing the kids to start reading a chapter...them so willingly complying....(well Leah really did...Noah was mostly just staring at his desk when I wasn't in the room).
Then I left to take Baby T to daycare, and said, "I will be right back...we will get right back to schoolwork".

During that 10 mins, everyone discovered that it was the most beautiful August weather there has ever been, and all plans went out the window. I mean, who could be inside on a day like that? Wow. They went outside and started digging, and Rachel discovered and Earthworm, (then became sad that it was bleeding b/c Leah had hurt it digging)

Working on making him some sort of signal flag
Writing under the trampoline
Then the creativity kicked in. They got some of my fabric to use as plates and placemats
Then they started preparing their food....and that is when I discovered they were Indians. Which was great b/c we had just started learning about them. Suddenly, I knew how to turn it into school afterall.

Noah began making his own tools and weapons before I had come outside, so I ran in and got a library book and showed them some ideas of things they could make.
Then little brother came on the scene, and we all had some traompoline fun for awhile. (even Daddy joined us)
They wanted him to check out their teepee (under the trampoline)
Noah made himself an arrow...out of a bird feather he found, and part of a feather boa on a picture in his sisters' room. haha
I brought out the markers, and they started giving themselves war paint

Then Noah crafted himself a headband out of construction paper, and created a place for hanging pot above the cookfire.

His dad helped him make a bow
Then they all hid in the brush and called me out....saying I was going to kidnap them, and the brave Indian boy came after me with the bow and arrow, and save the fine Indian maidens.
Would he scare you away too? :)
The kids played outside...all day long. Noah said, "mom, we should just do this everyday...then school would be really easy". Yes son, it would be.

  1. What fun! If you want to do something on La. Indians, we have some resources for teachers on the www.louisianavoices.org website: www.louisianafolklife.org/LT/Articles_Essays/creole_art_native_overview.html.

(There is lots of stuff on New Orleans for later)

  6. That does look like a perfect day. I was thinking about you all day today, it was Gage's first day and I was so close to tears, wishing I could be like you and keep him at home. He was really excited and he loved it, so we'll see, I'm not confident enough to do more than preschool years. I think you are AWESOME! And I love that picture of Noah below - the you told him the nose picking would go on the blog and he did it anyway!
