Blowing out eggs

I wasn't sure how familiar anyone was with blowing out the eggs, so I didn't want to bore you by going into a lot of detail. Since a couple of you asked, I will tell you more.
You can poke a hole in the middle of the top and bottom of egg with an ice pick, skewer, or I used a tip of a knife. You have to be careful to apply enough pressure to poke the hole, but not too much, or the egg will crack. We had to keep going back and making our hole just a little bigger to get the stuff out. Then, after we blew the insides out, I washed them out real good, and then I melted the wax stick that comes with the egg kids over the hole to seal it up. We do this so that we can save the eggs. I can remember saving the ones we did as a kid for years. They are VERY fragile though, but it is just something different to use. I also remember melting crayons and making really neat designs on the eggs that way.
Brandy, I want to hear more about stuffing those eggs...how do they get the stuff in there? That sounds so neat!

  2. Yes, Heather, that is what you do. I used to keep mine just in an egg carton...but if they looked really pretty, you could keep them as decoration. I don't plan on keeping ours long, just thought it would be something different for them to do.

  3. Oh cool, but sounds like the sort of thing I would make a royal mess with.

  4. Ok, so with the confetti eggs... they're called "cascarones" in Spanish.....older ladies will just carefully break open the bottom of their eggs for a while and wash them out and let them dry. Then you can literally buy bags of junk to go in them (think glitter, holes from a holepuncher, and just little bits of paper)...then when you're ready to stuff them you glue something like tissue paper over the bottom to hold in all the goodies. Mikka, my roommate in college and I did some one year, but we didn't know how to do it and we wound up basically blowing out the eggs like you guys did.

The holes in the bottom don't have to be terribly small, it's usually the whole bottom of the egg. Anyway, it's really fun because every year when we would have egg hunts back in Del Rio, everyone has tons of cascarones and you break them over each other's heads. Very messy, but kids LOVE it! Usually we just did it outside. I'll try to find some pics! Also, in TX, you can buy them by the dozen at WalMart for like $1....much easier than making your own!
